Millie

Hi, my name’s Millie and you may have heard my story on the news but I’ll summarize just in case you haven’t. I was presumably hit by a car in Taos, NM and I lived on the streets with a broken back and without the use of my hind legs. I survived by pulling myself around and I was so quick that no one could catch me for 8 months. I was finally caught in a trash can and eventually ended up here. X-rays indicated that my back bone fused itself together but I had broken ribs and BBs throughout my body. I use a cart to get around that was generously donated by Donna Cashen, a volunteer with MaxFund. By the way, I get around really well in my cart but I cannot be left alone in it because it can tip over and then I’m stuck!

Despite all of this, I am the sweetest, most loving girl you’ll ever come across; however, I am a bit high maintenance. I may get along with other dogs if they basically ignore me but normally I don’t care for other dogs or cats, especially cats. I LOVE people though and I aim to please! I love to snuggle and give kisses and I love attention! I also enjoy being outside, unless it’s really cold.

Because of my condition right now I need help going to the bathroom by getting expressed. I have been working on strengthening my legs; they have already improved and the muscles are growing. I am able to push and pull both back legs which are the movements needed to walk but at this point, it’s hard to know if I will walk again or be able to go to the bathroom on my own. I had several open wounds when I came to MaxFund and now I just have one small one on my hip that is almost healed. Once it’s healed I get to start water therapy which will hopefully help me learn to walk again!

I need a family with lots of patience, time and of course LOVE. I probably need at least two dedicated people to care for me, to share in the work AND in the joy that I will provide. I am pretty good about “holding it” when I need to go, I’ll whine to let you know. But if you are not around, I may have an accident and because I can only scoot, I may accidentally step in it and make a mess- SORRY. I must be honest and let you know that the first couple of weeks will be challenging until we get into a routine but thereafter, you will absolutely love me. The people who know me and have cared for me at MaxFund will make sure to explain all the things you need to know about how to get me expressed and into my cart.

If you want a dog who will love you and snuggle with you and try to always please you, then I’m your girl. Did I mention that I have the most beautiful blue eyes? Please come and meet me; you WILL fall in love!

I am also available to foster if you want to help rehabilitate me and get me ready for adoption. As a foster animal all my medical care would be provided by MaxFund. Contact Donna at fosters@maxfundvolunteers.org if you want to learn more about fostering.
You can visit me at the MaxFund clinic on weekdays or call the clinic at 303-595-0532 to set up an appointment with my weekend foster family.
