So... you volunteered for Colorado Humane Society, and now want to volunteer at MaxFund?

I've been contacted by a number of volunteers recently who used to volunteer for Colorado Humane Society. Due to some changes at that facility in management and capabilities due to many reasons, many volunteers have been looking to other shelters to volunteer at. While we welcome volunteers from all over the city and with a variety of interests and backgrounds, there are a few things that make us different that you need to be aware of if you are considering volunteering for MaxFund Animal Shelter.

At CHS, dog walking is/was fairly relaxed and could be done with minimal or no training. This is due largely in part to the fact that any dogs that exhibit aggressive or fearful behavior are euthanized. At MaxFund, we are a no-kill shelter and we do occasionally have dogs that come from neglectful or even abusive situations. Many of these dogs harbor fear or anger towards humans. While we work with these animals, they are able to be walked by regular volunteers. We do our best to alert volunteers to potential dangers, but there is information provided during the dog handling course (part of the overall volunteer orientation) about recognizing body language, ways of preventing bites, and how to handle certain situations that you likely wouldn't encounter at other shelters. Because of this, anyone wishing to walk dogs as part of volunteering with MaxFund DOES need to go through the volunteer orientation as well as Dog Handling 101.

At MaxFund, we have a pretty relaxed atmosphere with volunteers. We don't schedule shifts, and volunteers are encouraged to work directly with the animals whenever possible, within their capabilities.

While we may not be as "old" as Colorado Humane Society, in the 20 years we have been around there have been no allogations or media reports regarding MaxFund that don't reflect us in the highest of lights. We don't discard of animals in dumpsters, and we certainly don't deceive people donating to our shelter, or participate in any financial misconduct. We also don't just "claim" to be no-kill, we truly are.
